Historic waterfall and mill buildings
The Great Falls/S.U.M. National Historic Landmark District in Paterson is a 118-acre industrial heritage site centered on the 77-foot Great Falls, the second-largest waterfall by volume east of the Mississippi, and home to 18th–20th-century mill complexes and waterpower systems designed by Pierre Charles L'Enfant in 1791. The district tells the story of America's first large-scale manufacturing enterprise, from Alexander Hamilton's vision through Paterson's rise as a world center for cotton, silk, and locomotive production.
